PHOTO RESTORATION - THE PROCESS
FROM ORIGINAL SCAN TO THE COMPLETED PHOTO RESTORATION
The original photo was provided to us already copied on paper. This provided an extra challenge because it limited our ability to obtain a more precise scan from our own equipment. Having a limited color history attached to this photo a lot more work was going to be needed in color enhancement
The pixel repair process begins and you can start to see the areas of the photo being generated. Filling in missing sections while paying close attention to textures and pattern. It is extremely important for the photo to maintain the same overall appearance.
Some of the most challenging work is still to come. Two thirds of the borders have been repaired and work has began on clothing, and the dolls. Keeping the integrity of the faces will be tedious and time consuming.
In this last rendering stage, you can see how the project has come together. The top portion of the photo was the most damaged and information was limited. Our digital artist had to take some liberties with shadows and textures on the building behind the children.
FINAL VERSIONS OF COMPLETED PHOTO
After little color adjustment for quality in the shadows and direction of light, we provided the client with a choice in how the final print would look. Keeping in mind when the photo was taken we wanted to keep the integrity of the antique image.
In this photo we have finished cropping the photo giving it a clean border. We chose to take a little of the aged color out of the photo giving it a fresh look. Softening the pixilation relieves some of the sharpness of our repair work while still generating the authentic look of the era.
A final choice, although one we did not recommend, was a complete black & white restoration. In some situations this is the preferred final output but with the time line of the photos history we believe it would be best with some antique feel remaining.
